The One Filter: Does It Have API or MCP Access?
After this step: you'll never evaluate software the same way again
Before buying any tool — before looking at pricing or features — ask one question: can my agent connect to this? If the answer is no, you don't want it. Because a tool your agent can't use is a tool you have to use manually. And your time is too valuable for that.
Old Tool Evaluation
- How does the dashboard look?
- What features does it have?
- Does it have a good mobile app?
- What do the reviews say?
New Tool Evaluation
- Does it have API access?
- Can my agent connect and pull data?
- Can my agent take actions in it?
- Will I never need to open the dashboard?

API Connected
every tool in the stack
API vs MCP
- API — a direct connection your agent can call programmatically. Pull data, push actions, automate workflows. This is the baseline.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol) — a newer standard that makes it even easier for AI to connect to tools and take actions. If a tool has MCP support, even better.
"Tools used to be built for you to use. Now the best tools are the ones your agents can use. If your software stack doesn't have API access, you're doing a lot of it yourself."

The Full Agent-Connected Stack
After this step: you see the complete tool stack for an AI-operated business — and what was cut
Every tool in this stack has API access. AI agents connect to all of them. Nothing requires manual dashboard work. If a tool didn't let agents in, it was replaced with one that does.
The Stack
- E-commerce: Shopify (full API) — product data, orders, customers, inventory
- Paid Social: Meta Ads API + Google Ads API — campaign management, reporting, optimization
- Email: Klaviyo API + Kit API — flows, campaigns, list management, revenue attribution
- Data/Research: Apify (web scraping + data collection) — competitor ads, market intelligence
- Scheduling: API-first social tool — specifically chosen for API access, not the popular ones
- Agent Infrastructure: OpenClaw — connects all of the above, manages the entire agent team
💡
What Was Cut
Tools with great dashboards but no API. If agents can't get in, it's not in the stack. A slightly less polished tool with full API access beats a beautiful dashboard you have to log into manually.

How to Audit Your Current Tools
After this step: you know exactly which tools in your stack are holding you back
Run through every tool you're paying for. For each one, ask four questions. This audit takes 10 minutes and will likely save you hundreds per month.
Q1
Does it have a public API? (Check their docs page)
Q2
Does it have MCP support? (Search "[tool] MCP" on GitHub)
Q3
Can an agent pull data AND take actions?
Q4
Am I logging into this manually on a regular basis?
💡
The Audit Shortcut
Ask your AI agent: "Review this list of tools I use. For each one, tell me if it has an API, what the API can do, and whether an agent could replace my manual usage of it." Let the AI do the research.

What to Do When Your Tool Doesn't Have an API
After this step: you have three options for every tool that's blocking your automation
Not every tool has an API today. Here's how to handle that — in order of preference.
Three Options (In Order of Preference)
- 1. Switch to a competitor that does. In almost every category, there's an API-first alternative. Less polished, but if your agent can connect, it's worth it.
- 2. Use a scraping layer. Tools like Apify can pull data from tools that don't have APIs. Not as clean, but gets the job done for data extraction.
- 3. Keep it but limit exposure. If you can't switch and there's no workaround, keep it but don't expand usage. Look for the exit as better alternatives emerge.
Stuck with No-API Tool
- Manual work every time
- Agent team can't help
- Data locked in a dashboard
- Growing tech debt
After Switching to API-First
- Agent handles everything automatically
- Data flows into your systems
- No manual dashboard work
- Ready for the AI-native future
"Every major SaaS company is adding API and MCP support right now. The market is moving toward agent-accessible infrastructure. Get ahead of it."

Your Action Plan
Audit your stack, cut what doesn't connect, build what does
Start today. The audit takes 10 minutes. The savings start immediately.
- List every tool you pay for — subscriptions, one-time, everything
- Check each for API/MCP access — docs page or ask your AI
- Flag tools with no API — these are holding you back
- Research API-first alternatives for each flagged tool
- Switch or add scraping layer within 30 days
- Connect your agent to every tool in the stack
- Stop logging into dashboards — let your agent do it
